Launched in 2018 as the successor to the venerable Lagoon 450, the Lagoon 46 refines everything owners loved about that boat — the flybridge helm with lounging, the raised salon with panoramic views, the vast owner cabin — while gaining a lighter, more efficient hull and a rig moved further aft for better balance.
In our charter fleet the 46 is almost always specified as a four-cabin, four-head Owner-configuration or a symmetric four-cabin layout for two families sharing. Under sail it is not a racing machine, but with a code zero unfurled in 12 knots true it settles into an easy 7 knots with cocktails poured and no one holding on. Under engine it delivers a genuine 8 knots at cruise with sensible fuel burn.

We reach for the Lagoon 46 first when two families are sharing and someone in the group has never chartered before. It is forgiving, stable, and socially generous — the boat where a nervous first-timer stops apologising by day three and starts asking about next year.
We recommend a Bali 4.6 instead if the daily rhythm is anchor-first — long lunches, sundowners, kids swimming off the platform — and the group values one big open living space over the flybridge lifestyle. We send an Astréa 42 if it's six adults who actually want to sail, or a Leopard 52 if the group is closer to ten or you want the extra cabin capacity for older kids and grandparents.
How it compares
The Bali's forward cockpit and tilt-up salon door create a more open floor plan. Choose the Bali if indoor–outdoor flow matters more than the flybridge lifestyle.
The Leopard is a genuine size-up — six cabins, more cockpit, more storage. Choose the Leopard for larger groups or a Caribbean charter; the Lagoon 46 is the sharper pick for eight guests in the Mediterranean.

- How many people can sleep aboard a Lagoon 46?
- Eight adults in four double cabins is the honest maximum for a comfortable week. The salon converts to an extra bed for one child, and a skipper (if crewed) sleeps in a small forward crew cabin — but eight adult guests plus skipper is the ceiling.
- Do we need a skipper?
- If someone in your group holds a coastal skipper licence and has real catamaran hours, no. If not, we strongly recommend a skipper for the first day at minimum — the Lagoon 46 is easy but not small, and marina manoeuvres in strong Mediterranean crosswinds catch out plenty of monohull sailors.
- What does a Lagoon 46 actually cost for a week?
- Total cost varies significantly with season, base and week — Mediterranean high summer is the peak, shoulder weeks are considerably lower. Bareboat, add APA (fuel, marinas, food, water) on top; fully crewed all-inclusive is a separate rate band. We quote three real boats at real prices for the base and week you want.
- Is it good for children?
- It's one of the safest platforms for kids we charter. High freeboard around the cockpit, wide side decks, stability at anchor, and a huge trampoline forward that children treat as a swimming platform.
- Can we cross open water — say Mallorca to Ibiza?
- Yes, the Lagoon 46 handles the 60-nm Mallorca–Ibiza crossing routinely in the sailing season. Time it for the morning window, watch for the afternoon thermal, and it's a comfortable day sail.
- How does it compare to the older Lagoon 450?
- The 46 is a genuine improvement: lighter, better balanced under sail, more storage, quieter salon, and the aft rig configuration eliminates the older boat's tendency to bury the bows in a breeze.
